Sarah Vaughan Live at Mister Kelly's & the London House - 5/21/18

Ready to pay tribute to this amazing musician, performer & woman! Tix HERE!

Happy Medium Ventures and Daryl Nitz Entertainment present

Sarah Vaughan Live at Mister Kelly's and London House: a benefit performance and preview for the documentary film, 'Mister Kelly's: Wasn't it a Time?'

Relive Chicago musical history as eight outstanding Chicago vocalists recreate the epic recordings of Sarah Vaughan at the legendary Chicago nightclubs, Mister Kelly's and The London House. “The Divine One” recorded her “At Mister Kelly’s” LP on August 6-8, 1957. This landmark concert has been remastered and re-released numerous times, but has finally been released with 20 complete tracks. On March 7, 1958, Sarah Vaughan recorded 7 tracks late night live for “After Hours at the London House.” This concert combines music from both Chicago shows with such classics as "Willow Weep for Me," "Just One of Those Things," "Honeysuckle Rose,” "How High the Moon," "Embraceable You," "Poor Butterfly," "I Cover the Waterfront" and many more songs from the Great American songbook BY Harry Warren, Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, and George & Ira Gershwin, plus Chicago’s own Johnny Frigo’s “Detour Ahead.” This two-act concert features Kimberly Gordon, Sophie Grimm, Lynne Jordan, Frieda Lee, LaShera Moore, Daryl Nitz, Jeannie Tanner, and Ellen Winters. Musical direction is by Andrew Blendermann, with Joe Policastro on bass and Phil Gratteau on drums. There will be a guest performance by a Chicago high school student protege from ChiArts.

This concert is also a benefit for the new documentary film"Mister Kelly's: Wasn't It a Time?”, produced by David Marienthal of Happy Medium Ventures, and directed by Philip Koch. Featuring interviews with Dick Cavett, Bob Newhart, Tom Dreesen, Lainie Kazan, and others, this film chronicles an era of entertainment at a nightclub circuit that “hosted a parade of a musical and comedic talent that would define American entertainment at the time and influence coming generations,”(Rick Kogan, WGN.) The legendary Mister Kelly’s illuminated legendary Chicago’s Rush Street, and the entire country, by launching talent like Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Bette Midler, Herbie Hancock, and Richard Pryor. Its visionary owners George and Oscar Marienthal smashed color and gender barriers to put fresh, irreverent voices on stage and transform entertainment, as America knew it in the '50s, '60s, and ’70s Once completed, the film “will illuminate a critical time and place not only in Chicago nightlife but in American cultural history”(Howard Reich, Tribune.) The film is scheduled for showing on WTTW Channel 11.

Audience members will also be able to bid on and buy memorabilia from Mister Kelly’s, The London House, and Happy Medium.

Come enjoy great music, support a worthy film project, and share in Chicago’s rich musical history, all on Monday, May 21 at “Sarah Vaughan Live at Mister Kelly's and London House.”

Ella Fitzgerald Live at Mister Kelly's: a benefit performance and preview for the documentary film, "Mister Kelly's: Wasn't it a Time?"

On August 10, 1958, Ella Fitzgerald recorded her “Live at Mister Kelly’s” LP. In 2007 the concert was remastered and re-released in its entirety, including the early and late sets. This Ella centennial celebration concert presents the entire concert, without song duplication, of both sets. Featuring such songs as "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "Summertime," "Witchcraft," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Stardust," and many more from the classic American songbook of Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Porter, and others. Featuring Sophie Grimm, Lynne Jordan, Frieda Lee, Liz Mandeville, LaShera Moore, Daryl Nitz, Alina Taber, and Ellen Winters. Musical direction by Andrew Blendermann, with Joe Policastro on bass, Phil Gratteau on drums.

Mister Kelly’s: Wasn’t It a Time
Mister Kelly’s Once called a “supernova in the local and national night life firmament,” the legendary Mister Kelly’s illuminated legendary Chicago’s Rush Street, and the entire country, by launching talent like Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Bette Midler, Herbie Hancock, and Richard Pryor. It’s visionary owners George and Oscar Marienthal smashed color and gender barriers to put fresh, irreverent voices on stage and transform entertainment, as America knew it in the 50s, 60s, and ’70s.

Now, with the club long gone, and its star talent reaching its golden years, George’s son David, goes on a quest to collect the memories of the clubs before they are lost. Celebrity interviews now include Bob Newhart, the Smothers Brothers, Dick Gregory, Lainie Kazan, Dick Cavett, Shecky Greene and Ramsey Lewis. Interviews with dozens of local musicians, staff, family, and patrons provide a delightful balance with engaging stories, rich with vintage detail. Discussions are underway to interview Woody Allen, Lilly Tomlin, Bette Midler, Barbara Streisand, Steve Martin and others.

The film will portray through interviews, live footage, photos, music, and song, the most beloved and famous talent of our time at the decisive moments when they showed up, dug deep, and broke in. How do you change the world with a laugh and a song? Find out in a film that documents the rise and fall of one of American entertainment's great proving grounds.

ELLA & LENA @ The Auditorium Theatre

Was a wonderful night! Review by Howard Reich of The Chicago Tribune:

"The evening opened auspiciously, with smartly edited film clips tracing Fitzgerald’s and Horne’s careers and, better still, featuring video of their musical performances. With these sights and sounds before us, one realized anew how much subsequent generations of performers owed to them.

So when singer Sophie Grimm launched into “Mr. Paganini,” a vocal showpiece identified with Fitzgerald, you could admire Grimm’s sleekly sophisticated scat singing while understanding that Fitzgerald’s technical brilliance has yet to be matched. Grimm wisely approached this music in her own way, bringing new vocal shadings to each phrase and joyous expression to bravura passages that lesser singers deliver with mere mechanical precision. Bravo."

Ella & Lena: The Ladies and Their Music

Popular Chicago vocalist Joan Curto, called “a seasoned interpreter who makes every note count” by the Chicago Tribune, celebrates the legacies and centennials of two vocal icons: Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. From the same team that brought the popular Cole Porter concert to the Auditorium last fall, the evening features Chicago favorites E. Faye ButlerBeckie Menzie, Tammy McCannPaul MarinaroTom Michael, and Sophie Grimm. The show will include many of the songs that each woman truly made her own: “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” “Oh, Lady Be Good,” “Lullaby of Birdland,” “The Man I Love,” “Stormy Weather,” and many more. This big-band celebration will be conducted by Rich Daniels and the City Lights Orchestra.

SHOUT OUT to Davenports Piano Bar & Cabaret

Today, I'd like to let you all know about a place I work and sing at about five times a month. Davenport's Piano Bar and Cabaret has given me wonderful times, and as most of my music gigs are private, or outside of Chicago, I wanted to give you a heads up that this place is great and I'm there several times a month to serve you - and even take requests :)

Mondays: Open Mic w/George Howe - 8:30 to midnight - George is a classic piano man with an incredible range and knowledge, along with the talent to back anyone up!

Tuesdays: Private parties only (call 773.278.1830 or email sberry@aol.com)

Wednesdays: Beckie Menzie & Friends - 8pm to 11pm - Beckie is the leading lady in the cabaret scene and plays a mean piano, so come to listen and even sing :)

Thursdays: Natalie Myre & Friends - 8pm to 11pm - Natalie is a fresh, young talent, specializing in upbeat jams to enjoy, with new guests every week!

Fridays: Marianne Murphy Orland and George Howe - 9pm to 12:30am - this deLIGHTFUL duo plays requests, while playing they're favorites from the 60's and 70's grooves, giving you a warm and feel-good night.

Saturdays: Daryl Nitz & George Howe - 10pm-1:30am - CABARET MEETS PIANO BAR is the best way I can describe this hilarious duo, who've played at Davenports for 15 years, making close to a perfect experience if you want funny, talented, and ENTERTAINING night for only a $3 cover!

Drink up! And enjoy the Cabaret room in the back with different guests every night!

AND Davenport's even has KARAOKE! EVERY FRIDAY FROM 10:30pm to 1:30am in back room.

Come hang with me and all the lovely people at Davenport's Piano Bar & Cabaret!

Happy March!

This month has been a blast! The birthday jam was SO fun and I have a few updates!

I begin Marc Robin's Alice In Wonderland at Marriott Lincolnshire on Monday! Putting the schedule up on the site today! A children's show, so bring the kiddies along!

Also, I've been brought onto the team of 'I Love Lucy' Live On Stage!, standing by for one of the lovely character actress roles in the show - it's playing through April 7th at the Broadway Playhouse in Water Tower Place, so check it out, and let me know if you're coming to see if I'm on that night!

I'm working with three other new works: one by my friend, Lara Filip, another by my friends, Charlie Irving & Johnny Gonzales, and one of my very own, using the music of my fantastically talented cousin, Caleb Hawley (www.calebhawley.com). I will give the update of what's going on with any of those when it does :)

Lastly, I have an amazing family. This includes my very close friends too. My family is SO generous, it blows my mind a little. Their kindness, support, and encouragement is something that I know my world would not at ALL be the same without. I love you all so much.

Jamming with The Brothers and Sisters Grimm for my birthday!

My birthday is in February and I'm turning 25, so I got
ALL of siblings to come down from their regular gigs in
Minneapolis (they're all professional musicians/performers in their own right) and perform with me for all my beautiful Chicago friends!

How's Your New Year New?

Today, I'm letting you all know that this past year has been amazing in MANY, MANY ways. And now, it's time for a new beautiful & tumultuous chapter, written just in time to read it! I am working on many new projects, but keeping up with the oldies (GREAT LIFE MUSIC, THE MURDER MYSTERY COMPANY, auditioning and so on)! Big things coming up are 1) My birthday bash at ABBEY PUB on Monday, 25th for my 25th birthday, 2) A new video with GREAT LIFE MUSIC, scheduled to shoot in the next month, and 3) NEWS WORKS from me and others that I'm working along with - VERY cool.

The more hours you put in, the more times you put your name in the pot, the better chances you have and the better you are.

TURKEY-DAY 2012 BEHIND US (no pun intended)!

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you're full and newly-inspired in your thankfulness! I am too! I'm heading into a few things:

1) Performing my second production with THE MUSIC THEATRE COMPANY as Rita La Porta in LUCKY STIFF, a fanTAStic musical farce, with New Jersey, French, and Southern accents, to name a few :) It's good stuff - more promotion for that later, but for now, know it's only 6 performances over 2 weekends (Nov. 30 - Dec. 9) and it will be a blast! They are FUN there!

2) I start the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre workshop for Michael Mahler and Rachel Rockwell's WONDERLAND, a new children's pop/rock musical based on Lewis Carroll's classic! Very pumped~~

3) I'm JUST beginning to set up my set list for my 25th Birthday Cabaret, which will be rocking on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 - definitely baller. Excited :)

There's much more to share, but that will be it for now - thank you for your support and interest - I hope to exemplify my support and interest to you as much as I feel yours - THANK YOU!

Shout-out to Church Gigs!

Every Sunday, I sing at two Catholic churches, and I have to give a shout out to them:

St. Alphonsus on 1429 W Wellington is a GORGEOUS church with a choir to match every 10:30am Sunday mass, as well as holidays and special occassions. The choral director, as well as the conductor, player, and arranger of MANY of the versions of songs we do, besides beautiful classics, Brian Bloye, is amazing.

St. Berchman's on 2517 W Logan is a sweet and fresh church where my friend, Jon Mercado, acts as parish music coordinator, director, and player, where I sing every Sunday night at 6:30pm.

Both interesting and uplifting pastors. If this is your thing, it's worth coming to along with me or separately when you can. :)

THE MUSIC THEATRE COMPANY : Chicago Theatre

Began working with my newest theatre company family today! Started rehearsals for FUGITIVE SONGS, which is a musical song cycle written by Chris Miller and Nathan Tyson, who just wrote TUCK EVERLASTING. Wonderful music and a LOT of talent in the room. There's five of us, all singing AND playing the entire show-long!! Check my schedule and see if you can make it out!

CABERNET CABARET VIDEO!

I got to be a part of a Cabaret at Arranmore Center for the Arts on Sept 7th, and it was a blast! Check out a bit of one of my newer arrangements (ROXANNE - The Police) and also hear some of my new fabulously talented friends, including Brianna AguilarAdrian AguilarBethany Thomas,Tiffany TopolLara Filip, and Jed Feder. Hope to reprise this at an upcoming cabaret - will keep you updated!

Reviews, Update, and Schedule for September loaded!

A few things to share:

1) OTHELLO: THE REMIX just got done playing the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and was a hit! Since I played the voice of Desdemona, over these past few months, I've checked on reviews the plays received and sometimes I'm even mentioned! Thought I'd share one with you:

'In making Desdemona a bodiless angel - whose vocals soar..."

2) I am now back in full swing in the city of Chicago, after just returning from playing the Minnesota State Fair with my sibs! Trey and Jennifer play EVERY DAY at Dino's Bandstand and my other brother, Reed, and his band 'Reed Grimm and the Shoeless Revolution' play EVERY NIGHT - this is through Sept.3 (Labor Day) so check them out if you're there! Now back in the city, I'm still rocking the MATT REED BAND (as a vocalist) and THE MURDER MYSTERY COMPANY (as an actor), and working on a new project I hope to get to report about soon - good vibes there.

3) Check out my schedule! I have fun things coming up in September, including singing at Jilly's on Rush Street, playing in MURDER's around Chicagoland and beyond, and am even a part of a special cabaret where women sing songs made famour by men, and vice versa that's called Cabernet Cabaret: With a Twist! Come hang out with me on any of my public gigs - I'd LOVE to see you there and have excessive amounts of laughs and smiles :))

OTHELLO: THE REMIX & Back in Chicago

Happy August!

I am recently back in the city from my WONDERFUL summer adventures in Sullivan, IL's Little Theatre On The Square, where I played 3 roles that I will remember for a VERY long time. Now, that I'm back in Chicago, I'm playing jazz, funk, soul, and dance music with the Matthew Reed Band, am singing around the city at churches, as well as working on some new private projects I'm very excited about.

I recently was a part of Q Brothers and Chicago Shakespeare's Theatre production of an adapted version of Shakespeare's Othello, called Othello:The Remix as the voice of Desdemona. It was a blast, and was performed at THE GLOBE (!!!) in London, England at the Globe To Globe Festival, as part of a project that brought theaters from ALL around the world, representing America, Chicago, and the Hip Hop language (the entire show in RAP - SOOO cool). Watch the whole thing if you like at http://thespace.org/items/e000066n. If you only have a few minutes and would like a taste of my voice, check out the video from when there is 1.10.46 left in the video. That's my first entrance - I jokingly and lovingly refer to what I did in this show as "riff-acting" - humming, scatting, wailing, and more. JQ directed me and he was so lovely to work with. The rest of the production staff and cast were so kind and pleasant - I couldn't have asked for a better time. Check it out and tell me what you think!

Starting the newest adventure!

Hello people!

I am heading out to Sullivan, IL tomorrow to start my contract with LITTLE THEATRE ON THE SQUARE where I'll be playing Rizzo in GREASE from June 6-17, Millie in 7 BRIDES FOR 7 BROTHERS from June 20-July 1, and Ruth in PIRATES OF PENZANCE from July 5-15. If for some reason you wanna rock mid-land Illinois for a night, shoot me an email! Here's more info (just scroll down on the link):
